Reclaim your kitchen from processed foods and mystery chemicals, then cook through 75+ recipes that focus on eating well for whole-body health.
With all the emphasis put on healthy eating, you probably realize how consequential your food choices are to your mental and physical health, for better or worse. But did you know that a 2017 publication from the National Institute of Health estimates that there are now more than 10,000 chemicals the FDA regulates in food (and that there are only about 100 employees doing so)?
Yet you can control to improve what you’re cooking and eating—and A Healthier Home Cook provides an accessible guide for doing just that. In author Shawna Holman’s best-selling first book, A Healthier Home, she took her enthusiasm for healthy living to the page and provided an accessible, room-by-room roadmap for making the home A Little Less Toxic. Now, she’s back with a full book to support most people’s entry point: the kitchen and cooking.
A full basics chapter includes shopping guides for all kitchen essentials (detailing what materials to look for and avoid). Then she shares a collection of recipes, many of which help readers avoid store-bought products with questionable ingredients:

Fantastic
Iâve been obsessed with Shawna and her âA little less toxicâ Instagram account for years. This cookbook was a no brainer to purchase because I knew I would love all the recipes. Itâs easy to follow and has lots of great meals and little gems of information for a healthier lifestyle. Love it!

Easy, approachable, nutritious meals
Shawnaâs book âA Healthier Home Cookâ is stupendous! First of all, I love that no matter what meal Iâm making from her book I know Iâm feeding my family a nutritious meal. I love that many of the meals use pantry staples I already have so Iâm able to âshopâ my pantry thus saving money. The White Bean Chicken Chili is a new favorite of mine. I made it this evening without any meat and it was incredibly delicious! My twin 19 month olds devoured it and I love that I was able to give them protein rich bone broth (which I learned how to make thanks to Shawna). One of the best features is that the book lays flat! I strongly dislike when cookbooks donât lay flat. Finally, unlike many other cookbooks Iâve bought throughout the years, this is a cook book Iâm actually cooking from and will continue to cook from forever. It isnât wasting space on my shelves like other cookbooks are. Well done, Shawna ð

Yum! All gluten-free, 95% dairy free. Plus, all recipes have pictures!
*Update: Iâve been cooking my way through this cookbook since it arrives. Every single recipe has been a hit! This is my fav cookbook of all time. Itâs filled with real good recipes, not a bunch of random substitutions that are loaded with carbs or cause bloat. Even those who donât care about eating healthy will enjoy the recipes in this book, I promise!!If you canât tell by the insane number of bookmarks in my photo, I am VERY excited about these recipes. Theyâre all gluten free, and the majority are dairy free. As someone who is on the âpaleo spectrumâ I am stoked for these recipes because they all look delicious and itâs great to have a book Iâll be able to hand my kids and tell them to pick anything in it to make! Also, I greatly appreciate that EVERY recipe has a picture. Not all cookbooks do, so this is a very appreciated perk.Dairy note: Out of the recipes that use dairy, most can be swapped for non-dairy alternatives (like using coconut cream instead of raw cream in the creamy tomato soup) or you can skip the dairy element (like not sprinkling cheese on top of the egg bake and cottage pie). I would 100% recommend this book even if youâre dairy freeâ the vast majority of recipes included are naturally dairy-free.

Just what I needed
After being a crunchy mom for 7 years, you start to run out of steam and ideas. Shawna’s cookbook combined with a little bit of time spent every week writing a meal plan has changed my life and dinner every night is much more enjoyable. She uses the same kind of ingredients that I already have, unlike other crunchy cookbooks that require additional trips to the store. The instructions are simple and she explains exactly why she recommends doing it the way she recommends doing it. My “why?” brain sends a silent thank you everytime. She covers all the bases. The other night I had some fish and an idea of what I wanted to do with it, but didn’t know how. I consulted Shawna. Previously I would have consulted Fanny Farmer, but sorry Fanny, you’re just not up to date anymore. Shawna is the Instapot Queen and I need to know what she thinks.

Clean cooking made beautiful and simple
This book bas taught me a different way to cook – a healthier way. All of these meals are fresh, whole foods that work well with my familyâs need for no gluten or dairy. I think more in processes now than recipes per se. Like soaking my beans and grains a head of time has become part of the process of making good food. I think of what I’m going to make and how to process the ingredients in steps ahead of time so I am ready to put together a wonderful, healthy meal for my family. Weâve enjoyed all of the recipes I’ve made so far, but it also includes beat practices tips for your pantry – like a master spice blend to save time in the future. This is a beautiful gift for yourself or others to encourage us to make small changes in our highly processed world to be just a little less toxic.

Most used cookbook ever!
Iâve never used a cookbook so much but this one is just too good to not use regularly! And by regularly I mean within the first week I made maybe 6 recipes from it, then the next another 5, and the next another 5. I want to try them all and many have been repeated often! The marshmallows are now a staple in our home, add them to your morning coffee and be blessed. We now keep many of the sauces and spice blends on hand too! I bought a second to gift for the holidays because itâs too good not to share with the people I love! You should buy two too, because trust me youâre going to want to share these meals and this book with those you love!

The Best Cookbook
I have several cookbooks that are mostly filled with great ideas and maybe special occasions when I have the time, but this cookbook is different. I have made sooo many of these resipes since I received it and have gone back to them several times. I love how doable the recipes are and so nutritious. My kids have loved everything that I’ve made as well. I recently discovered my son has a major gluten sensitivity, and this book is all gluten free ð I can’t get enough!! Literally in the last 24 hours I’ve made the gummies, maple cinnamon marshmallows, whole chicken, and broth. Tomorrow we’re making the Dutch baby pancake again and banana bread. And I’ve made the chicken soup countless times and it’s the best ever and okay I’ll stop, just buy it ð

The most gentle and delicious healing support
The gifts that Shawna has shared with the world are invaluable. Being diagnosed with a chronic disorder is terrifying and unsettling. Then, as you dive deeper into the world of healing, realizing just how much around you can be harming you, it can be overwhelming and lead to stress that’s just as toxic as the harmful things themselves. Shawna makes the transition feel attainable, and by sharing her recipes, and the many other tips/tricks in A Healthier Home Cook, it felt like a gentle lifeline, as if I had a loving family member looking after me, helping me to walk my healing journey. The book is 1000% a staple I will cherish for the rest of my life.
