125 family-friendly recipes based on the author’s popular Just a Taste food site, with each recipe featuring a totally unexpected ingredient
Kelly Senyei, founder of the food site Just a Taste, has garnered millions of fans with a delicious hook–every one of her recipes has a secret ingredient, something totally unexpected that takes a dish from common to extraordinary. Some of the 125 tried-and-tested recipes are surprisingly simple, like her Vanilla Bean Drop Doughnuts made with Greek yogurt, or the Sweet and Tangy Baked Chicken Wings made with blackberry jam. Other recipes are nothing short of genius, such as Savory Caramel Corn made with bacon and thyme, Healthy White Chicken Chili made with hummus, and Salted Caramel Bread Pudding made with chocolate croissants.
Just because the secret ingredients are surprising doesn’t mean they’re expensive or hard to find, either. Kelly is a busy mother of three, and she made sure every ingredient can be found in any supermarket. Her family-friendly recipes cover every occasion, from crowd-pleasing snacks and 30-minute entrées to make-ahead sides and holiday-worthy desserts.

Ice Cream Pie Template from The Secret Ingredient Cookbook
Prep: 6 hours 20 minutes (including freezing) | Cook: 10 minutes | Yield: 8 servings
SECRET INGREDIENT: ICE CREAM CONES
Every time I buy ice cream cones, I open the box and am met with a handful of intact cones and a whole lot more broken pieces. When life gives you shattered cones, make ice cream pie! Both waffle and sugar cones are easily transformed into pie crust, but I prefer the buttery flavor of the waffle variety. It’s only the first of several decisions you’ll be making when using this ultimate ice cream pie template. Get creative with your ice cream flavors and toppings, because the combinations are truly endless.
Kelly’s Note
The ice cream cones must be finely crushed so that they can be tightly packed into the pie plate to form the crust.
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
In a medium bowl, stir together the crushed waffle cones, butter, and sugar until combined. Press the mixture firmly into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch metal pie plate.
Bake the crust for 10 minutes, then set it aside to cool completely. Remove the ice cream from the freezer to soften slightly while the crust cools.
Once the crust has cooled, add alternating layers of the ice cream and your choice of toppings into the crust. Wrap the pie securely with several layers of plastic wrap, then freeze it until frozen solid, a minimum of 6 hours.
When ready to serve, remove the plastic wrap and top the pie with the whipped cream. Slice and serve with your choice of sauce.
Ingredients 1¼ cups finely crushed waffle or sugar cones (see Kelly’s Note) 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 3 tablespoons sugar 6 cups ice cream(s) of your choice ½ cup chopped toppings of your choice, such as candy, sprinkles, cookies, or nuts 1½ cups whipped cream, for serving Chocolate sauce or caramel sauce, for serving

All sorts of flavor combinations
The book is full of interesting-sounding recipes with flavor combinations that seem unusual but, according to the author, work beautifully. I’ve bookmarked several I want to try.I purchased a used book for a fraction of the new cost and it looks almost brand new — a tiny ding at the bottom of the spine is the only flaw.

A Must Have Cookbook That Was Worth The Wait!
We have been waiting excitedly for this cookbook to be released and it did not disappoint! This may be our new go-to favorite cookbook. The layout is appealing, fun, and lots of easy to follow recipes that my mini chef will be eager to create. I love how the Secret Ingredient is placed at the top of the recipe to help you imagine and anticipate how that ingredient will take the dish to the next level and keep your guests wondering what makes this dish amazing. The My Not-So-Secret Kitchen secrets has great tips that we have learned from Kelly in the past and are definite game changers. The unique twists on the recipes make this cookbook a fun read. We are not sure which recipe to start with but are willing to experiment and go outside our culinary comfort zone. Previous recipes from Kelly have turned into family favorites and we know these recipes will do the same!

Love this book!
This should be added to every cookbook collector’s shelf. There are so many interesting twists on traditional recipes. We have all seen recipes for Shrimp and Grits, but with tequila? Carrot cupcakes….with cocoa powder? A panzanella salad made with croissants instead of traditional croutons? Cannot wait to try the recipes, and it will be fun to serve them to guests. “These turkey burgers are amazing? What’s in them?” “Oh, just some creamed corn.” The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is that many of the recipes do not have photographs. Not a big deal, but just something I noticed.

My Mistake!
From the promo I saw; I thought the secret ingredient was a cake mix. Very few involve a cake mix. Keeping the book but probably will not follow this author.

One of my favortie.
I just had to take the time to say how much I’m enjoying this cookbook. I’ve made over a dozen of its recipes now, and ALL of them have turned out amazing. I initially thought the “Secret Ingredient” idea of the book was just going to be some silly gimmick, but I was very wrong; all of the suggestions were not only unique and surprising, but went with the dish perfectly.I have around 50 cookbooks (yes, I know I have a problem), but this is definitely one of my favorites. Lots of pictures, clear instructions, and most importantly: fun.Do yourself a favor and pick this up.

Amazing cookbook!
I LOVE THIS COOKBOOK. I recently saw Kelly Senyei on Rachel Rayâs âItâs Our Shortcut Showâ where she made a banana bread & cookies using box cake mixes. I went on Amazon immediately to order this cookbook. It came today and paging through it there is not a recipe I donât want to make. There are beautiful color pictures of each recipe! GREAT JOB KELLY! I went online and ordered another cookbook for my 11yr old granddaughter because it is a great starter cookbook for her. Weâre going to have fun this summer trying these recipes.

The new staple in my kitchen!
I love this cookbook! I have followed the author Kelly on her Instagram account Just a Taste for years because her recipes are amazing and the cookbook is somehow even better! The instructions are easy to follow, the ingredient lists are not impossibly long, and she even tells you what kitchen tools are required for each recipe out on the side by the ingredient list which is SO important for me (for prep!). The secret ingredient in each recipe will have you thinkingâof course why didnât I think of thatâ or just have you scratch your head because itâs so bizarre but somehow so amazing? Youâll just have to get it and see for yourself 😉
